Haunted Places in Utah: Are They for Real?

Every October as I pull out my fake cobwebs, three foot spider, and an array of skeletons from my closet (no pun intended), I also like to wipe the dust off of any literature that gives me to heeby-jeebies. For book club, we do the same. In the past we have given ourselves nightmares by reading books like The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, Blood Moon by Teri Harman, Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron, and Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice.

The picture of dorian gray, blood moon, interview with the vampire, the shadow of the wind, the graveyard book, the haunting of hill house

Now, I'm not one to fall for staged sightings of UFO's and I'm rarely scared by the Halloween haunted forests that come 'a callin' every October (though the Haunted Forest in American Fork did once make me scream). But, I'm not going to lie and say I haven't felt something akin to the paranormal before.

Ever been in a place and felt your skin crawl or a rush of air when no windows were open? What about the strange feeling that someone was watching you? If you haven't had any of these feelings or sensations, you owe it to yourself this October to experience the paranormal. Let's take Utah: are there really haunted places in our own backyard? You be the judge.

13 Mysterious & Scary October Reads for Book Club

It's that time again! October creeps up on us every year and it's time to heat up the cider, put on the cozy socks, and pull out a good ol' scary read. And if you're not into the creepy-crawly stuff, October is the perfect time for a mysterious novel. Whether it's a classic mystery or a new horror novel, everyone should read one of these books this fall (though you may have to make sure all the doors are locked and you have your loved ones nearby . . .)

Below is a summary of each book. Since we've done most of these books for book club, I also included a link for decorating and food ideas to have your own scary book club night!

Top 8 Delicious Reads Fright-Night-Movies

It's that time of year when we embrace the creepy, seek out the eerie, and evoke the haunted. It's one of my favorite times of year! Did you know that some of the best scary movies were inspired by books?

Here's our
Top Eight Delicious Reads
Fright-Night-Movies

that started out as creepy books…View at your own risk!!

The Ring

I watched The Ring at a cabin very late at night and have never recovered! It still scares me to this day! Be leery if anyone tries to hand you a copy to watch… Make sure it's really just the movie!

The Silence of the Lambs

thomas harris, delicious reads

This book and movie has been scaring the skin off people for years. If you haven't entered the mind of Hannibal Lecter… this is the year to do it.

I Am Legend

richard matheson

Who knew that the Will Smith movie with that creepy scene where they are all huddled together was inspired from a book?

The Shining

If you loved The Shining, you may be interested to know that Stephen King released a sequel to the story in 2013. The books is called Dr. Sleep: Stephen King returns to the characters in The Shining in this riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrence and a very special twelve year old girl he must save.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

You better be careful…someone always knows what you're up to.

Interview with the Vampire

We read this book in 2010 for our Delicious Reads Halloween Selection. It was interesting to read the book and then watch the movie. This is a very different take on Vampires than the more recent Twilight.

Here are a few pics from our evening back in 2010 for this book.

The Woman in Black

I haven't seen this one yet but it definitely looks creepy! Plus it's always fun to see an actor you've loved in other movies play someone totally different.

Jaws

This movie is the bane of every swimming encounter I have. I will forever feel like a gigantic shark is lurking beneath me!

Congrats! You've made it to the end of our list. That means you're brave enough to try out the actual movies. Hopefully this helps you get in the halloween mood!!

Happy Haunting!
Your Writerly Ranter,
Brooke
