Harry Potter Book Club Food Ideas

As always, food is really important to us but it was ESPECIALLY important for our 10 year Harry Potter retreat!
Our menu was based off food mentioned through out the books and prepared by Hogwarts house elves. We had two different menus. One for our dinner feast and one for our English style breakfast. And we had a HUGE dessert and sweet shop bar we could graze from during the evening!

Dobby aka Erika, was in charge of our Food Committee and she did such a fabulous job. Thank you so much Erika and everyone who was on the food committee!!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Book Club Ideas {FREE Printables}

Goblet of Fire Book Club Delicious Reads
Moderating Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter #4) for Delicious Reads was EPIC. The whole weekend was perfection. Each moderator went all out with discussions, activities, decor, and costumes.

Start off with a Goblet of Fire and have each person put their name in. I created my own version of the Goblet of Fire. I just used wood glue to attach a large wooden candlestick to a ceramic popcorn bucket from DI (my local thrift store). Then I painted them a wood color. My plan was to use this recipe for blue fire. My brother also suggested getting blue cellophane, cutting it to look like fire, and putting a light and fan in the bottom of the cup, which I think is an excellent idea.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Book Club Ideas

Hey guys welcome to Book Club Ideas for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I really liked this book and feel like we are introduced to many new "beasts" and this is where we hear about Tom Riddle's Diary (which later we know to become one of those things, I don't want to say in case you haven't read the whole series.) I moderated this book at our Harry Potter Retreat and there were so many things you could do for it. I had to choose which ones I would do because I couldn't do them all. Keep reading and find out all we did at our book club for this book.

Ten Years - Harry Potter

It has been a dream of Kelly's to have a Harry Potter Book Club. So this year being our Tenth Anniversary we decided to do a huge Harry Potter Retreat so that we could discuss all seven books.

At our last book club we gave everyone their Hogwarts Letter and Train ticket to the retreat.

Summer Reading Recap

Fall is approaching fast, so it's time to recap some summer reads! Here are a few of my favorite books I read this summer, and my thoughts on each. Many of my summer reads this year were re-reads -- I guess I was in the mood to revisit old favorites all summer long. Now I can't wait to cozy up with hot chocolate and some fall reading.

Me Before You (Jojo Moyes) I re-read this novel early in the summer because I was dying to see the movie and wanted to have the book fresh in my mind. I remember enjoying this book when I read it shortly after its release, but definitely enjoyed it more after a second read.

I listened to the audio this time, which was really well done. But I still haven't seen the movie! If you've seen it, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Rainy Day Sisters (Kate Hewitt) This novel has a light, fun, chick lit feel to it, even though it does hit on some bigger issues. When Lucy's life in NYC hits crisis level, she accepts an invite from the half-sister she barely knows to come stay with her in a remote seaside village in England.

I loved this quick, fun read, and I totally fell for the sweet love stories in this novel (even though I am often a little reluctant to fall hard for romances). The town and its inhabitants are quirky and lovable, and it's easy to get sucked into this one and wish you could pop in for a visit.

The Thirteenth Tale (Diane Setterfield) I'm still sad that I missed our book club discussing this book last fall, but I wanted to read it on my own anyway (many months late!). I listened to the audio and absolutely loved it!

The mystery was engaging, the story was so hard to step away from, and it had the perfect amount of spooky creepiness. I always love dual timeline stories, especially when the modern day characters are researching mysteries in the past, so this was right up my alley. It was a re-read for me, and I loved it just as much or more the second time around! See our book club review post for this book HERE.

The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls) This has been on my to-read list for many years! I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it, because I absolutely loved this memoir of Walls's unconventional childhood and the struggles she overcame as she grew.

I actually read Half Broke Horses a few years ago and loved it as well, so check that out if you've already read The Glass Castle and want more.

Hyperbole and a Half (Allie Brosh) I love Brosh's self-deprecating sense of humor, and the hilarious comics that accompany each story. This book is a quick and funny read that does hit some serious points: readers who have dealt with depression (whether their own or in a loved one) will recognize a lot of truth in the chapter chronicling the author's depression, and might even learn how to relate better and offer support to someone struggling with depression.

Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling) In preparation for our big book club Harry Potter extravaganza, I've been re-reading the Harry Potter series this year. This summer, I listened to the audiobooks for books 4, 5, and 6, and I'm starting book 7 today! No matter how many times I reread Harry Potter, I always fall in love with them all over again.

5 Favorite Fictional Teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week

Did you know this week is Teacher Appreciation Week? I can't help but think about some of the teachers in my life who have made a difference . . . and some of the big winners are from books. Here are 5 of my favorite fictional teachers, pulled from the pages of some of my favorite books.

Miss Honey from Matilda :: Matilda was one of my absolute favorite books as a child, and the wonderful Miss Honey definitely contributed to my love of it. Matilda's kindergarten teacher is the first (and only) person in the book to recognize Matilda's brilliance, and (more importantly!) she loves Matilda exactly as she is, which can't be said of her family.

Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter :: I'll be honest with you . . . I had a hard time including only one teacher from Harry Potter in this list (although 'Favorite Professors from Harry Potter' ought to be a post in itself!). But of course, Professor Dumbledore can't be left out of any list of great fictional teachers. Despite being the most powerful wizard in the world, he devotes his life to raising up the next generation of wizards, he always has time for his students, and he teaches them gently and wisely, allowing them to come to their own conclusions. Every school could use a teacher like Dumbledore!

Mrs. Baker from The Wednesday Wars :: At first, Holling is convinced that he's asked to spend extra time in class with Mrs. Baker as a punishment. But as they get to know each other better, he learns that Mrs. Baker is helping to teach him not just about their classroom studies, but helping him to grow into a strong and good man.

Jane Eyre from (you guessed it) Jane Eyre :: Poor Jane didn't exactly have an idyllic childhood, but she becomes a governess who loves Adele and always has great advice and wisdom for her. I admire Jane's strength of character, independence, and her success in overcoming a terrible childhood.

Miss Stacey from Anne of Green Gables :: Besides being an energetic and lovable teacher, Miss Stacey really steps up by becoming a friend and mentor to young Anne. She encourages and molds Anne, both personally and academically, and pushes her to be her best in all aspects. I love her personal approach and how she directs Anne's passion toward success instead of seeing her as a nuisance (as many teachers would!).

Do you have a favorite teacher from literature?

Our book club picks for 2016 are...

It's always difficult (understatement) when we choose our books to read for the next year, especially when I make sure our selection has a mix of: Fiction, Young Adult, Classics, Non Fiction and Historical Fiction.

It's a balancing act to find books that we really want to read along with books that stretch my members outside of their usual reading comfort zones. But, I think we achieved the impossible and created a fabulous book line up for next year and I'm excited to read and discuss EVERY SINGLE one of these books!!

Harry Potter Inspired Pumpkin Pastie Recipe

Yesterday on Instagram I posted a photo of my BEAUTIFUL Illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone book next to these scrumptious Pumpkin Pasties I made and got several requests to post my recipe so here it is!

And don't think that these pumpkin delights are just for Harry Potter fan, oh no. These mini pies are for any PUMPKIN and/or DESSERT FANS. These pasties are a glorified mini pumpkin pie that are the perfect size to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Without further adieu, here's the recipe, enjoy!

Harry Potter Inspired Pumpkin Pasties

Filling makes about 4 dozen miniature pasties.

INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs, slightly beaten
3/4 cup sugar
1- 1 lb. can pumpkin

1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 2/3 cups evaporated milk (1 can)
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 boxes of 9 oz pie crust pastry (enough for two single standard pie crusts per box)

DIRECTIONS: Add all pie filling ingredients into bowl and mix well until smooth. Bake the pie filling only (no crust) in a large casserole dish in hot oven (425 degrees) for 15 minutes. Keep oven door closed and reduce temp. to 350 degrees and continue baking for 45-50 minutes or until knife inserted in center of dish comes out clean.

1. Cool filling on wire rack.

2. Make or purchase pie crust pastry. Roll thin and cut into circles approx 4" in diameter. (I used a dessert bowl to make my circles since I didn’t have a cookie cutter that would work.)

3. Add a spoonful of cool pumpkin mixture towards one side of the center of the cut out pie crust circles. Fold circles over the crust into a half-circle and firmly crimp the edges closed with fork.

4. Brush pasties with egg white wash (with a dash of salt) and slice three small slits in the top for venting. Place pasties on a greased cookie sheet, and bake at 400 degrees until crust is a light golden-brown, around 9-12 minutes.

Serve warm or at room temperature. As another option, you can brush butter on top instead of egg white wash and sprinkle cinnamon sugar for an even sweater treat.

This month we are thrilled to share a look inspired from one of the most famous book series of all time...
...Harry Potter.

We decided to do a "nontraditional" Harry Potter Makeup by choosing to focus on one of the supporting characters,  Hedwig the owl. (Harry Pet.)

We created this look by mixing textures and fabrics in shades of cream, gray, white and nude. We created a feather headband and necklace to bring in the look of feathers without overwhelming the palette.

Jen created a dramatic eye look to mimic the shape of an owl's eye using a combination of black and brown shadows. Jen then create a metallic brow. Then we create a deconstructed fishtail braid to finish off the look.
