Looks from Books: Ruin & Rising

This month we are reading Ruin and Rising, the 3rd and final book in the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. You can see our epic photos from our Shadow and Bone book club last fall HERE.
http://www.amazon.com/Ruin-Rising-Grisha-Trilogy-Shadow/dp/080509461X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1395948546&sr=1-1&keywords=ruin+and+rising
This book revolves around a girl named Alina who must find the strength to defeat the Darkling by forming alliances and mending rivalries.

The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army. The time has come for the ultimate battle of good versus evil, which side will be left standing to rule all of Ravka?

The Look:
When we read the first book in this series, Shadow and Bone, we themed our evening and our attire around the books traditional Grisha colors of black, red, blue and purple.
But for Ruin and Rising, we choose to celebrate the main character Alina and her Saint-hood status of being the "Sun Summoner."
As I mentioned, the white in the outfit represents Alina the sun summoner saint, and the House of Harlow necklace I paired with this outfit represents an important symbol in the book.

I found it interesting that Leigh is not only an amazing author but also a makeup artist and band member in Hollywood. She attended Yale and is from Jerusalem. She is definitely someone I would love to meet, a mix of brains, creativity and coolness. Amazing!!!!

Looks from Books : The Golem and the Jinni

In July at Delicious Reads we are reading The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. This story is about two mythical creatures named Chava and Ahmad who come from clay and fire and are then transformed and transported to New York City. There they become unlikely friends, even though they are from completely separate cultures.

For this look I used touches of red to mimic the fire of The Jinni and the outdoor scenery to mimic the clay of The Golem.

Looks from Books: The Goldfinch

For the month of June in Delicious Reads Book Club we are reading the Pulitzer Prize Winning book: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Much of this book takes places in art galleries and centers around a young boy named Theo who loses his family at a young age. Theo desperately clings to a small painting that reminds him of his mother and the life he had before everything changed in the blink of an eye.
“This is just about the first painting I ever really loved,” his mom tell him as she pauses in front of a tiny canvas.
-Original painting done by Dutch painter, carel fabritus in 1654
This goldfinch painting leads Theo to the underground art world where he finds intrigue and danger!
I wanted to use the setting of an art gallery to take photographs for this book and then put together a look I would wear to an art gallery. I found this gorgeous red dress via J Crew for under $30 and paired it with nude heels, a sparkly cardigan, a crisp white handbag and a simple tasseled silver necklace. These pictures were taken at an art museum, just west of Temple Square in Salt Lake City.

Looks from Books: Carter Beats the Devil

Looks for books, carter beats the devil

Hi I'm Jacque from Looks by Lovelies and we are going to begin collaborating with  Delicious Reads on a monthly basis to bring you Looks from Books - a series of inspired looks from the books we are reading on Delicious Reads.

Our latest book club read, Carter Beats the Devil is a fictional story based on a real magician named Charles Carter who lived in the 1920's. This book is full of magic, mystery and love and it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. I decided to mix sparkly pieces like these shoes and skirt for a magical feel with a pop of red to create this book inspired look. Love, Jacque
