Pretty in Print: Haunted Gingerbread Houses

To go along with any fun Halloween read, we thought it would be fun to create a few haunted houses of our own.  Haunted gingerbread houses are such a fun activity to do during the month of Halloween
and they are the perfect craft to go along with Shirley Jackson's classic novel.

Book Club Ideas for "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson

  Photography by McKenzie
To start off our haunted evening, we gathered at my house to carpool to SLC where this special book club was being held.
Do you like our serious spooky faces lol!

After our short drive we arrived at Bethany's house with anticipation to see what beautiful spooky things she had come up with. Bethany has a talent and a true GIFT for throwing parties and bringing any theme to life so we were excited!!

We all walked in at once to see Bethany fabulously dressed holding her puuuurfectly themed black cat named Dooby.

Then as soon as we turn into her gorgeous penthouse apartment we saw the food table decorated to the nines!! (yes I like to use old lady expressions.)

I already did a full blog post just on the food with all of our recipes that you can find HERE

Everywhere we looked Bethany had tucked little details that kept us looking for more treasures.

Even the individual food platters had us "Oowwing" and "Aawwwing!"

Bethany even had Hugh Crain's haunted old bones on one end of the table and his deceased wife Renee's wedding dress on the other.

One of my favorite touches that Bethany had was the old 1963 "The Haunting" movie (based off the book) playing on the wall while we were mingling about and eating.
Perfection.

Bethany had each of us put our name in for a spooky surprise gift and Kellie won! She recieved some Harvey & Son's pumpkin spice tea (you can find this brand at B&N or through the link), a set of macabre earrings and pendant along with a few B&W candies.

Food Ideas for Any Haunted Get Together

“It was a house without kindness, never meant to be lived in, not a fit place for people or for love or for hope. Exorcism cannot alter the countenance of a house ; Hill House would stay as it was until it was destroyed.”
― Shirley JacksonThe Haunting of Hill House

We had SUCH amazing food for this book club that I had to share not one but ALL of our recipes and beautiful photos with you y'all!

Blueberry Frightening Fizz mocktails that we drank out of our own "cup of stars"

"Eleanor looked up, surprised; the little girl was sliding back in her chair, sullenly refusing her milk, while her father frowned and her brother giggled and her mother said calmly, 'She wants her cup of stars.'
Indeed yes, Eleanor thought; indeed, so do I; a cup of stars, of course.
'Her little cup,' the mother was explaining, smiling apologetically at the waitress, who was thunderstruck at the thought that the mill's good country milk was not rich enough for the little girl. 'It has stars in the bottom, and she always drinks her milk from it at home. She calls it her cup of stars because she can see the stars while she drinks her milk.' The waitress nodded, unconvinced, and the mother told the little girl, 'You'll have your milk from your cup of stars tonight when we get home. But just for now, just to be a very good little girl, will you take a little milk from this glass?'
Don't do it, Eleanor told the little girl; insist on your cup of stars; once they have trapped you into being like everyone else you will never see your cup of stars again; don't do it; and the little girl glanced at her, and smiled a little subtle, dimpling, wholly comprehending smile, and shook her head stubbornly at the glass. Brave girl, Eleanor thought; wise, brave girl."

Get the Look: "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson Book Club Costume ideas

Delicious Reads

"The Haunting of Hill House" is set in the 50's and there wasn't much to go on for dressing up, we choose to dress up in a more Victorian/Scary/Gothic look instead. Our book club ladies showed up in a variety of dress and styles which only added to the uniqueness of our groups look.
 (Photos by McKenzie and Summer)

We asked everyone to put on their best serious face for our group shot!

A BIG thank you to Bethany (pictured above) who not only moderated our book but also opened her beautiful home to all of us. We all had a lovely little road trip to downtown SLC to visit Beth's home!
