"Kids of Appetite" Book Club Ideas

"We are all part of the same story, each of us different chapters. We may not have the power to choose setting or plot, but we choose what kind of character we want to be."
- David Arnold, Kids of Appetite

- Example of the Invitation to Book Club -

Hello fellow chapters! You are invited to an evening full of Heartfeelers and Super Racehorses (no sideways hugs permitted).

I'm not sure about you, but Kids of Appetite contained some of my favorite one-liners of all time. I laughed out loud and I cried out loud, all before page 50. I'm so excited to chat with you all about the memorable characters and feelings. So many feelings! I genuinely can't wait to share Vic and Mad with you all!

If you haven't read this book then you must put it on your "To Read" List ASAP. David Arnold is a literary genius and amazingly this is only his second book. He is also the author of Mosquitoland which was widely praised.
I know I know you might be saying that Contemporary Novels aren't your thing but trust us you won't be mad you picked up this book.

{Activity}

Alix had such amazing ideas. In the Evite she linked us to a google survey where we answered questions about ourselves. We were suppose to tell her three things that people at book club didn't know about us and to share if we felt comfortable something about our lives that we wanted to share of trials we went through.  Later before the discussion she had us guess who the people were from the three things we did. We couldn't go through everyone but it was fun to become a chapter in everyone's life and to share a little piece of ourselves by sharing our stories.
Our next activity was set up when we arrived. We were to go around and try to do all the activities she had set up for us. They were all based on the places the main character of the book, Vic goes to  to scatter his dad's ashes. I loved this idea and it was so much fun.

∞ First Stop ∞
"Hang me from the Parlour"
In the book the gang easily figures out this clue and they are off to the Tattoo Parlor. Vic's parents got coordinating tattoos when they were first married. So we choose our own tattoos to put on for book club.

∞ Second Stop ∞
"Toss Me off the Palisades"
Toss me off the Palisades was to represent our favorite quotes from the book. If you would like a copy of all those quotes download them here.

∞ Third Stop ∞
"Bury me in the smoking bricks of our first kiss"
At this stop in order to complete the task all you had to do was eat a Hershey's Kiss and then give some one at least a 15 second full on hug. In the book Vic talks about the side hug and how it is not a sincere hug. So no side hugs here.

∞ Fourth Stop ∞
"Drown me in our wishing well"
The third stop was also our drink for the night. Our book clubbers got to mix their own drinks to the flavors they wanted.

∞ Last Stop ∞
"Drop me from the top of our Rock"
We chose a rock and painted it how we wanted. It was fun and creative and something to take home to remind us of this book.

{Discussion Time}
To get to know each other a little better Alix sent out a google survey to each book club member. In the survey we were suppose to tell three things that we thought no one at book club would know about ourselves. There was also a place for us to share a hard time in our lives that everyone may not know about. This was totally optional but a safe place to share if we would like to. Then at book club Alix had us try to guess who the person was of the three things listed. It was fun and also surprising to see who the person was that had done those three things. It was a reminder that we are all people who have gone through hard things but also fun things in our lives and that we might have a little more in common with each other than we realize.
