"The Boys in the Boat" Book Club Ideas

πŸ‘†πŸΌ The official complete title to the book πŸ‘†πŸΌ

This was such an amazing book club book to discuss and read about the history of the 1936 Olympics and the events in the U.S. around that time. Whitney had a fun time coming up with ideas for the night. When we first arrived we were surrounded by patriotic themes and Olympic themes.

{Decorations}

We always need time in the beginning to catch up with each other. It's a true gab fest and we could talk for hours.

{Minute to Win It Olympic Games}
First you need to divide your group up into teams of 4 and then assign them a country to represent.
There is nothing like a good healthy competition to bring a group closer together. We have some very competitive people in our group and it's fun to see everyone get into it.

The Medals
You can pick up some medals at your local Dollar Store or try these on Amazon.

{Prize}
and everyone went home with their own gold, silver and bronze macarons.
Aren't these beautiful and they tasted so good too.

Game 1
Pull off the tissues out of the box one at a time with one hand behind your back. I am so sad we were too involved in cheering to get a picture of the tissues flying everywhere. It was hilarious.

Game 2
This game you needed to move skittles from one plate to the other by only using a straw.

Game 3
The first one to move the Oreo cookie from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands wins.

Game 4
Final game was to put panty hose over your head with a tennis ball in the bottom of one of the legs. Then you use the tennis ball to swing and hit the bottles of water down. The first to do this all the way to the end wins.

...and the WINNERS are...

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ United States of America πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

{Discussion}
Whitney found some footage on YouTube of some of the propaganda the Nazi's used. She also put together a powerpoint presentation.

"Triumph of the Will"
(6 minute intro)
One thing we also learned about this film is that many college courses use it in discussions as an example of how brilliant it was put together back in the 30's. Unfortunately it was used to promote evil. But still an amazing job by film maker Leni Riefenstahl. She changed the face of documentary film forever. Check out this article on the film.

 Here is that powerpoint I was telling you about.

Look at this sweet little surprise that came to say hi at the end of Book Club
