Food Ideas for "Shutter" {by Courtney Alameda}

This month's book club we read the YA Thriller Shutter by Courtney Alameda.

We thought this would be the perfect time of year to read a scary book with Halloween just around the corner. The food table was positively spooky with the bloody table cloth and dry ice fogging over everything.

{Sides & Salads}

Moldy Guacamole with Rotted Black Chips
This guacamole was excellent. I loved it combined with the dark chips.

Spider Webbed Hard Boiled Eggs
Shoot you can't see the eggs here but they were a neat experience with the food dye to make cracks all along them. There is a picture of one of them in the picture at the bottom.

Dry Ice, Guacamole,

Creamy Tomato Blood and Basil Soup
This soup was to die for.

Tomato Soup

Spicy Whole Roasted Brain Cauliflower
I think this looks like a brain so what a perfectly creepy dish to have tonight.

Cauliflower

Arugula "Heart-Beet" Salad with Candied Pecans and Gorgonzola Cheese
I love a beet salad, simple and delicious.

Murder Red Fruit Salad
Watermelon is one of my favorite fruits. This salad has watermelon, blueberries, red grapes and strawberries.

Beet Salad

Crockpot Monster Eyeballs

Meatballs

Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

These AMAZING sandwiches were inspired by a part in the book (on page 200) when Micheline and Ryder are trying to calm down after something traumatic occurs so they go into the kitchen to make vegemite grilled cheese sandwiches (Ryder is Australian so he enjoys it.)
We decided to make our grilled cheese tastier so Erika created three amazing flavors:
1. Caprice grilled cheese
2. Chicken, spinach and artichoke
3. Good old fashioned grilled cheese

Black Bat Wings
These may look disgusting but trust me they were so good. It's a little freaky to start to eat them but you will get over it fast and enjoy more than one!

Bloody Glass Shard Cupcakes
How ingenious are these? I am amazed at the talent in our book club. Erika made these( and the grilled cheese) and they both turned out PERFECT.  But be warned, the candied glass can really cut you!
