12 must read time travel novels

Outlander (by Diana Gabaldon) We can't write a time travel book list without including the hugely popular Outlander series, about a British combat nurse in 1945 who walks through a standing stone and straight into 1743 Scotland. Romance, intrigue, danger -- this series is popular for a reason!

A Wrinkle in Time (by Madeleine L'Engle) This middle grade classic makes a great re-read for grown-ups, too. Meg's father disappeared while doing secret government work, but the arrival of a mysterious stranger will take her on a journey through time and space to rescue him.

Mariana (by Susanna Kearsley) Julia Beckett moves into an old farmhouse that has always entranced her, and quickly realizes she is not alone there -- she encounters haunting remnants of a young woman who lived and loved there centuries ago, and finds herself transported to 17th century England, and into the world of Mariana.

A Knight in Shining Armor (by Jude Devereaux) This bestseller has been called one of the most romantic novels of all time. While vacationing in England, Dougless Montgomery is abandoned near the graveyard of Nicholas Stafford, an earl who died in 1564, when Nicholas himself appears, reincarnated to clear his name of treason.

Timeline (by Michael Crichton) A group of historians in 1999 funded by a tech billionaire develop an amazing new technology that will transport them to 1357 France, and plant them right in the middle of civil war in the Middle Ages,

Replay (by Ken Grimwood) Jeff Winston dies suddenly at 43, and wakes up 18 years old, with all his memories of the next 25 years intact. He gets to live his life again, avoid mistakes, make money from his knowledge of the future, and seek happiness. Until he dies again at 43, and again awakens as an 18-year old . . .

The Rose Garden (by Susanna Kearsley) Haunted by the unexpected death of her sister, Eva returns to the only place that has ever felt like home to her: an old Cornwall estate. But mysterious voices and hidden pathways lead her to a time long past and into the arms of a man who lived centuries before her, and Eva must decide where she really belongs.

The Time Traveler's Wife (by Audrey Niffenegger) Clare and Henry met when Clare was 6 and Henry was 36, and married when Clare was 23 and Henry 31. Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder, which causes his genetic clock to periodically misplace him in time, both past and future.

Time and Again (by Jack Finney) When Si Morley is recruited to join a covert organization exploring the possibility of time travel, he jumps at the chance to travel back to New York City in the year 1882. But when he begins to fall in love with a woman he meets, he'll have to choose between the two worlds forever.

Kindred (by Octavia Butler) Dana, a modern black woman, is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South, where she has been summoned by the son of a plantation slave owner. She is drawn back repeatedly over the years and each stay becomes more difficult, dangerous, and life-threatening than it was before.

Ruby Red (by Kerstin Gier) Gwyneth's sophisticated, beautiful cousin has been groomed and prepared her whole life to travel through time, but unexpectedly, Gwyneth is the one who finds herself trasnrpoted. This YA novel is the first of a series full of time travel, fantasy, and romance.
